Pierce
Cultural Center School
The
Pierce/Cultural Center School is a fifth through sixth grade satellite program of
the Pierce Community Elementary School. Through an exciting partnership between the
Flint Community Schools and the Flint Cultural Center, students enjoyed opportunities
for integrated learning in the arts, sciences, and history. The goals of the school
are threefold:
- Discover the impact
of utilizing a diverse array of cultural resources as primary sources for learning;Explore the effect
of integrating active hands-on learning into the standard classroom curriculum;
- Identify the value
of using the arts as teaching tools for other subjects.
The
School is located in the Sarvis Center on the campus
of the Flint Cultural Center. Students are taught by
a dedicated staff of classroom teachers and specialists
in visual art, vocal, and instrumental music. In addition,
students have regular instruction at Cultural Center
institutions, Longway Planetarium, Flint Institute of
Arts, Flint Institute of Music, Sloan Museum, Flint
Public Library, and Flint Youth Theatre.
Utilizing
these facilities, students have an opportunity to engage
in an array of learning experiences that are integrated
with the classroom curriculum. Current offerings include
the study of ceramics, drama, and creative movement
through active, participatory learning. Students may
also participate in a museum docent program, perform
in a theater production, understand the sciences through
special units such as rocketry and dissection, and examine
the making of a professional production of "The
Nutcracker" with its artistic director.
Now
in its sixth year, the Pierce/Cultural Center School
continues to demonstrate success in academics, cultural
awareness and artistic achievement through innovative
learning. To find out more about the school, please
